G.I. Joe Is Ready To Transform.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to watch Destro team up with Starscream? If you have, your question might have an answer soon. Two titans of the toy industry when G.I. Joe and Transformers meet each other in a crossover movie. Paramount Pictures has officially given the film a green light and this has undoubtedly pumped both loyal fanbases up.

A Surprise Twist At The End Of “Rise Of The Beasts” Introduced “G.I. Joe” To The Transformers Universe.

The film will most likely follow the narrative of Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts. For those of you that need a crash course; G.I. Joe was introduced to the Transformers film franchise in a mid-credits tease. Such a tease sprayed a firetruck full of fire on the Hollywood gossip circuit. Now, the rumor is confirmed.

Without further ado, lets dive into this and talk about what we know about this G.I. Joe and Transformers team up.

What Do We Know?

With this crossover having rumors that go back ten years to 2014, there is a lot to unpack.  So here is what is confirmed.

  • Steven Spielberg is attached as executive producer.
  • The production team has a sizeable roster, with Transformers veterans Michael Bay and Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached.
  • John Chu, director of¬†G.I. Joe: Retaliation¬†has expressed interest.

Michael Bay Will Continue To Produce Films For The Transformers Franchise.

There is no news on when or where filming will begin. However, there is a plan. di Bonaventura has stated: “Like every other Transformers movie, the ingredients of the movie is humans and robots get together to stop the villain. The Joes are going to be part of the ingredients now.‚ÄĚ

Crossover, Or Merger?

It seems to be that this will be less of a crossover and more of the introduction of G.I. Joe characters into the Transformers  franchise. If we are speaking in business jargon, this is a merger and Transformers is absorbing G.I. Joe into their business portfolio. Which honestly is the right move to make. Transformers as a series has two films that have hit the billion-dollar milestone at the box office. Even with the recent misfire of Rise of the Beasts; the franchise has grossed over seven billion dollars worldwide.

“Snake Eyes” was a massive failure for the “G.I. Joe” Franchise. it lost sixty million dollars at the box office.

On the other hand; the¬†G.I. Joe¬†franchise hasn’t had a film even reach half of a billion dollars at the box office. Worldwide, the franchise has grossed over seven hundred million dollars. The latest entry into the franchise:¬†Snake Eyes lost sixty million dollars at the box office. I will be fair and say the numbers are skewed because¬†Transformers¬†has seven franchise installments to¬†G.I. Joe’s¬†3. That being said; I will also state in the same breath that that is because¬†Transformers has been the more reliable franchise. Box office success has simply just earned the Autobots more screen time.

How I Would Do It

There are a lot of ways to approach this concept and I think the best way to approach it would be to keep it simple. Paramount needs to realize that the very existence of the film earns them the nostalgia dollar. We won’t need unnecessary callbacks or bowls full of ‘member berries. We’ve already purchased our tickets. You have our attention. Just keep our attention with a good story.

These are two beloved toy franchise from the 1980s and early nineties. People who grew up watching movies in that era were raised by massive explosions, machismo, brutal fight sequences and Steven Seagal running like a girl.

My Ideal Crossover Between “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” Would Probably Be “Rambo” With Robots Involved.

Spielberg should pay homage to that blockbuster era. Whoever writes and directs should give us a fun, smart, rollercoaster ride. It should have espionage and double crossing. Have COBRA working with a non-specific Eastern Bloc or Asian superpower. They can eventually make contact with the Decepticons and cause a global shift putting power into the wrong hands. This will lead the G.I. Joe team to convince the Autobots to join the fight against evil. It’s a simple plot, but with good writing it will work.

Just write the film intelligently. The people sitting in the seats have forked over hard earned money to be entertained. Don’t assume that they’re all braindead consumers who are entranced by shiny things. Popcorn movies don’t need to be dumb. Buck this annoying trend that has the story talk down to us.

To quote Rod Serling: “Whenever you write, whatever you write, never make the mistake of assuming that the audience is any less intelligent than you are.”

Final Takeaway

Following the lore of¬†Transformers is a smart play by Paramount. Despite¬†Rise of the Beasts¬†only breaking even at the box office, there is still a lot of steam left in that train. Having the project overseen by Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay ensures that the quality will be maintained. Sure, the franchise has had some disappointments. However, the people on the¬†Transformers production team learn to adapt and course correct.¬†Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen¬†was atrocious. Yet, that didn’t stop fans from turning out in droves to see¬†Dark of the Moon.¬†

The franchise has a dedicated fanbase. G.I. Joe also has a fanbase that has just been waiting for a good movie. Inserting G.I. Joe characters into what is already a cinematic juggernaut will unite the two fandoms. This will galvanize Transformers as a franchise and give it an even brighter future than it already has.

All we ask is that they make it good.
