Monsterverse Resets Eyes On Godzilla

Since his debut in Kong: Skull Island (2017), King Kong held a titular role alongside Godzilla within the ever expanding Monsterverse. And now with his recent film Godzilla x Kong: New Empire (2024), it would seem that the great ape’s journey to find a new home has finally come to an end. So, where does this leave Legendary Entertainment to turn to? Why, none other than the big G-Man himself, of course! Although the franchise had conclusive arcs with their Big Three (Mothra, Kong, Godzilla), the King of the Monsters seemed to actually lack a sort of proper ending since he was more of a side character since Godzilla Vs Kong (2021).

However, there is talk amongst the masses that Legendary may have plans for a new solo Godzilla film. How could this be possible? Well, if you’ve seen both Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and New Empire (2024), you’ll find some rather minor details in the films that were used in old Toho Production films. Therefore, we at Geek News Now will point out these two clues, and what this could mean for the future of the Monsterverse.

Monsterverse Route 1; Destoroyah

Godzilla: King of the Monsters sparked the beginning to what its fanbase were led to believe the birth of an old foe for Godzilla to face in the Monsterverse. In the film, as Godzilla struggles against Ghidorah, the military launch an overpowered chemical weapon called the Oxygen Destroyer. While this performed exactly as expected, it didn’t kill either monster and resulted in Ghidorah reawakening Earth’s Titans. As for Godzilla, this heavily incapacitated him, retreating to an ancient temple within the Earth’s core.

Looking back at the Oxygen Destroyer, this actually gave birth to an organism known as Destoroyah in the Toho films. In Godzilla vs Destoroyah, the powerful Titan was coincidentally near Godzilla when the weapon went off. As a result, Destoroyah evolved from a micro-organism into the most fearsome creature that nearly killed the G-man through the power of Micro-Oxygen. Combined with its durable and oversized structure, it ranked as one of- if not the most- powerful of Godzilla’s adversaries.

Although, in Legendary’s Monsterverse, we saw no such occurrence take place. This could mean that Destoroyah is either still in the process of being mutated, or already has. Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing Godzilla’s old nemesis make a possible return.

Monsterverse Route 2: SpaceGodzilla

This Kaiju actually holds a special place in the hearts of Toho fans. Formed from the combination of Godzilla cells and radiation from a black hole, SpaceGodzilla stood on equal ground to the King of the Monsters in Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla. The reason why we say Legendary could include SG into the Monsterverse is due to the lore dropped in the novelization found in Skull Island. The Iwi tribe once lived in harmony with the Goji species (Godzilla’s ancestors). The Iwi once referred to these docile lizards as ‘Those that ate the stars and spat them out’, referring to Godzilla’s Atomic Breath. Where did this all take place? HOLLOW EARTH. The Goji species would use this power to defend the Iwi tribe, and in return the Iwi praised the Goji as gods.

However, one specific Goji devoured a star and became so enamored by its power, it was driven mad and turned on those around it. Of course, the only time we get a clear depiction of this beast is from an Iwi painting that featured a flying Goji with wings, breathing atomic energy. Since this took place within Hollow Earth, this would explain why our Godzilla refuses to descend to that place: to avoid succumbing to temptation.

Furthermore, both the Goji and Kong species united against this threat, banishing it from Hollow Earth. However, the legend never stated they killed it. Whether this means SpaceGodzilla exists in the Monsterverse or not, will depend entirely on Legendary to fill in those missing pieces.

Final Thoughts:

Between hints toward Destoroyah and SpaceGodzilla, I think Legendary’s got a good story on their hands for another Goji-focused film. Furthermore, It would be interesting to see how they would reintroduce these Titans into the Monsterverse. Director Adam Wingard even spoke of a potential Godzilla-focused film if Godzilla x Kong: New Empire succeeded. And given it’s recent success in the box office, this could very well be the case.
