Crunchyroll’s Best- Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End:

In this Adventure/Fantasy series, we follow the after-story of an Elven Mage named Frieren. Since the defeat of the Demon Lord, the Hero’s Party can finally rest, and the world is at peace. However, as time passes, it soon becomes clear how long Frieren lives compared to her allies. This all changes when Heiter, the original party’s Priest, becomes old and requests Frieren take on his apprentice, a young Mage-in-training named Fern. Can Frieren learn to take humanity’s mortality into account this time around, or will this just be like the times of old?

“Do Not Give Up On This Show!” – gamer069

To which I wholeheartedly agree with! Despite posting this comment as a 1-star review, it’s to simply point out that Beyond Journey’s End has a lot going for it. It may be slow-paced with its storytelling, but it makes up for it with its comedy and adventure. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End can be watched on Crunchyroll, and is currently set for 25 episodes for the first season.

The Apothecary’s Diary:

Set in the Ming-era of China, Maomao works alongside her father as an ordinary Apothecary (Drug Doctor). However, she is kidnapped and sold off one day to work in the Red-Light District of the Rear Palace. Although she despised this, she soon finds herself enthralled by the prospect of solving medical mysteries and having access to various poisons. In addition, she must also learn to coexist with the annoying Palace Eunuch, Jinshi, as he tries to woo her over. Can Maomao enjoy what time she has at the Rear Palace? Considering her immunity to almost every known poison, I’d say she’s gonna have a swell time.

“The Must-Watch For This Season!” – Kavorth

The combination of both Detective Drama and Character Development is more than enough to keep viewers interested. And considering the main character’s quirk of poison immunity, it’ll definitely lead to some awkward shenanigans. The Apothecary’s Diary had just concluded their first season, with season 2 set to air next month.

A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special:

Desir attempts to undo the future. Image from crunchyroll.com

This series on Crunchyroll has a bit of a twist. In a world overrun by Shadow Worlds, a group of heroes fail to save their world. However, the last survivor, Desir, is sent 13 years back in time, after an explosion nearly kills him. Armed with the knowledge of things to come, the young man sets out to reunite with old friends and change the course of history forever. A Returners Magic Should Be Special is sort of a reverse-isekai series, so it’ll be very interesting to see how the main character will handle things when certian events unfold.

“A Good Manwha (Korean Series) With Lots of Potential” – Magnum0122

Considering this started as a Korean LN series, it was very surprising to see it adapted into a Japanese anime. Props to the animaion team for making this series well known across different audiences.

Crunchyroll’s Chill; Flying Witch:

Makoto arrives to the countryside. Image from animebird.net

Despite its title, Flying Witch is actually the calmest magic series to watch this year. Although it aired back in 2016, some people have returned to watch this show for its very slice-of-life storytelling. A young Witch-in-training, Makoto Kowata moves to the countryside to live with her cousins. Despite being a witch, this doesn’t surprise her relatives as they seem use to the supernatural. As she continues her training, she soon learns that her cousins hometown is filled with supernatural entities, sparking a new chapter in her family’s ordinary life.

“Charming, Absolutely Charming!” – LionMaru67

The series is even compared to the likes of Kiki’s Delivery Service. Since Makoto is a witch-in-training, and is able to talk to her cat, Chito, who knows if her next move is to open her own baked goods delivery job. Jokes aside, this series is definitely a must-watch if you love witches and magic.

The 100 Girlfriends Who Really Really Really…..:

If you’re a fan of the classic Harem anime trope, you’re in for a real treat! Rentaro Aijo has successfully been rejected by 100 women in his middle school life. After visiting a shrine, the God of Love appears before him, correcting a mistake he made, and gifts Aijo an instant love effect. Now, any woman he’s destined to date will instantly fall in love with him. However, there’s a catch. If he does not love any of the women who fall in love with him, both parties will perish. Now with a new goal in life, Rentaro Aijo aims to find that special someone. But, what will he do when he realizes that he’s destined to date 100 women?!

“This Series Is Pure Comedy” – DarkMotive

Despite the fact the series has some unique fanservice (I mean it’s a Harem anime, of course) the show does a really decent job of making sure the main character isn’t your run-of-the-mill dense protagonist. What makes the series even more enjoyable is the fact that every girlfriend Rentaro receives has a personality that defines their character to the fullest. Indeed The 100 Girlfriends who really really really REALLY love you is worth the watch this year!

Honorable Mention; Kingdom Of Ruin:

Adonis (Right) accompanied by his mentor, Chloe (Left). Image from crunchyroll.com

It is the Gear Expansion Era. The time of Witchcraft is over, and witches are no longer deemed worthy of respect. Now hunted down as opressors of the future, the Witch Hunts begin. For apprentice Adonis, watching his mentor suffer at the hands of humanity was the breaking point, and now seeks to end the world. With his path now carved in bloodshed, can Adonis find any salvation in this dying world, or will his future drown in red.

“A Mirror Look Into Modern Times” – PolarWrath

To put simply, this series is all about revenge! There will be bloodshed, language, suspense, and gore. Therefore, this series is not for the faint of heart. But, don’t let that stop you. The Kingdom of Ruin definitely doesn’t hold back when it comes to stories of revenge. So, we’ll let you decide how you feel about it.

And, that’s the Top 5 anime of 2023. All the above series can be watched on Crunchyroll. If you know of a series that’s amazing to watch this year, let us know in the comments below. Also, be sure to check out our Facebook page, as we keep our viewers up-to-date on the latest happenings.
