While We Look Forward To 2024, Warner Returns To Their Roots

Sometimes, the best way out of a jam is to go back to square one and remember what made the people love you in the first place. Warner Studios ended the year on a high note, with Barbie smashing records and cruising past Mario to become the highest grossing movie of 2023. This was a shot in the arm for the ailing studio, but it wasn’t enough. Warner still sits on a mountain of debt that David Zaslav is slowly and creatively eating away at.

2024 looks to be a year for Warner to turn things around.  While highly anticipated projects like Superman: Legacy and The Batman: Part 2 have been pushed back to 2025 due to the work stoppage, Warner still has an impressive lineup of films set to be released. Dune 2, Godzilla Vs. Kong and Bettlejuice 2 are movies that will get fans out to the theaters (in theory). Mad Max, Joker, and Twister will also have new installations to their respective franchises as well.

There is one film slated for release in the new year that has caught my attention. In the second quarter, after 94 years of laughter, chaotic hi-jinx and getting audiences ready for the main event, the Looney Tunes will get their well-deserved time in the spotlight.

The Day The Earth Blew Up

The new film will be the first full length Looney Tunes movie without a human co-star. Animator Peter Browngardt; known for such hits as Uncle Grandpa, Futurama, and Venture Brothers will be making his directorial debut.

The Beloved Combination Of Daffy Duck And Porky Pig Will Be At The Center Of The Plot For “The Day The Earth Blew Up”.

It will be centered around the fan favorite duo of Porky Pig and Daffy Duck. Details of the movie are scarce, but reportedly we will find the two beloved characters working together in a bubble gum factory. After a series of antics, they will discover a plan for aliens to dominate Earth with mind control.

It sounds like we will have the classic Porky and Daffy Duck Dodgers vibe setting the tone for this movie which will be a load of fun for the audience.

Who Will Be In It?

As I said, details of the movie are scarce, so I haven’t been able to find out which¬†Looney Tunes characters will be featured in the film aside from Daffy and Porky. I would assume that Bugs Bunny has a prominent role in the film. I can’t imagine Warner Brothers giving the¬†Looney Tunes their theatrical debut without him.

It is after all, a Looney Tunes movie. The program by its very nature is chaotic. I’m assuming the film will go in all sorts of directions that will allow all of the major players to have a decent amount of screen time.

There is however, one character that the fans will want to see who might not make the cut. After his scene in¬†Space Jam: A New Legacy was removed, Pepe Le Pew’s future with the¬†Looney Tunes¬†remains uncertain.

Pepe Le Pew Has Been A Polarizing Character In Recent Years. Will Warner Allow Him To Be on The Big Screen With The Rest Of The Gang?

In recent years, the character, who was designed to make fun of misogynists who lack self-awareness, has been taken out of context by modern audiences. As a result, he has become a polarizing and unnecessarily controversial character.

I hope this movie doesn’t take itself too seriously and will allow us to see Pepe and Penelope Pussycat on screen with the rest of the gang where they belong.

Why This Movie Matters

For Almost 100 years, Looney Tunes has been synonymous with the Warner Brothers shield. Generation after generation has grown up with them and cherished their absurd antics, whether it was in their original format on the big screen or on T.V. in the later years.

With the streaming era blitzing our children with content, it gets harder every year to bond with them and pass down content that we used to enjoy. A theatrical Looney Tunes movie will not just make me nostalgic and bring alive those fond memories that combined hilarious slapstick comedy with first rate animation. It will also allow me to share those experiences that made me laugh and brought me so much joy, with my daughter and we can keep these wonderful characters alive for another generation.

If there is no legacy for a studio as historic as Warner to share, then the future of the studio is meaningless.
