Ready to Kick Ass and Take Names In The New Hellboy Game

Born in the fiery pits of hell, and raised amongst mere mortals. The right hand of doom and destined harbinger of the apocalypse is back and ready to wreck havoc in his blazing new game.

Comic book origins

Created by Mike Magnolia and published by Dark Horse Comics, the story is about Hellboy, arriving on Earth in 1944. He would later be adopted by Professor Bruttenholm and brought up in the B.P.R.D., or the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Throughout the comics, movies, and games Hellboy travels across the planet fighting mythical monsters of all cultures.

Previous Games

The first game to be published was Hellboy: Dogs of the Night. Released on PC in 2000, but later ported to the PS1 in 2003 under a different name titled Hellboy: Asylum Seeker.  Although the games are similar they also share some minor differences. While the graphics in the PC port look a bit better the controls and voice acting on the PS1 sound and look way better for sure.

For comparison here’s the PC voice acting and here’s the PS1 voice acting though the PS1 was somewhat better it was still considered one of the worst PS1 games to come out and an even worst cash grab of a movie tie-in that had nothing to do with the movie at all

The next title that was released was the movie tie in Hellboy: The Science of Evil for PSP, PS3, and Xbox 360. Based on the movies by Guillermo del Toro with a rating of 3.5/10 on IGN this beat-‘em-up was considered lackluster as the gameplay felt stiff and a hollow shell of what it wanted to be. A good beat-’em-up combat should flow well with combat being simplified and allowing the players to string along combos or throw enemies around making the game more enjoyable and this game has neither.

Hellboy: Web of Wyrd

Announced during the 2022 Game Awards, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd trailer looks like something that has just been ripped out of the comic books. Developed by Upstream Arcade and Good Shepard Entertainment along with Dark Horse Comics and Mike Mignola. This comic like game will be a roguelite action-adventure that combines the use of close combat and long ranged abilities allowing the players to create chain-like attacks.

The game starts when an agent of the B.P.R.D goes missing. It’ll be up to Hellboy and his band of agents to uncover what happened to his missing colleague and the mystery of what lies within The Butterfly House.

Unfortunately we’ll have to wait for more information to be released as the game has no set release date. However, the game will be available on steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox one, Xbox series X|S, and switch. Hopefully this will finally be Hellboy’s first proper good title. Given the fact that the developers actually do look like they care about what the fans want given that the last two titles that were briefly talked about were utter crap.
