Gamera Rises Again!

That’s right folks! The ancient defender of Earth, Gamera, is set to return this year on Netflix. On March 25th, an official trailer on the Netflix Anime YouTube Channel launched, revealing the Kaijus new design for the series. In addition, it will consist of 6 episodes, each featuring our favorite defender fighting a specific Kaiju from his past.

With the new series set to release this year, let’s take a look at what the minds at Kadokawa and ENGI (Entertainment Graphic Innovation) have in store for us.

Who Is Gamera?

For those unaware, here’s a brief history. An ancient sea turtle that once laid beneath the Arctic, Gamera rose from its slumber when it was disturbed by a nuclear blast. Despite wreaking havoc across Japan in retalliation, the citizens soon realized that the giant turtle was never the real threat.

Soon, many more dangerous Kaiju appeared, each being dealt with by the giant turtle. Furthermore, it expressed no heinous nature toward people, especially toward children. As a result, the people of Japan soon began worshipping the giant turtle Kaiju as their protector.

Despite appearences, Gamera also posses the ability to fly at incredible fast rate of speed. With the addition to breath fire, i guess you could say this is like a giant, flying Bowser.

Rebirth Production

Gamera: Rebirth is produced by Kodokawa Corporation and animated by ENGI. Believe it or not, this company also animated series such as Uzaki-chan Wants To Hang Out, and Trapped In a Dating Sim. Back in 2005, Cartoon Network licensed Gamera for an animated series set for 2007. However, the series never even reached productivity.

Eventually, on November 16th last year, Kadokawa announced Gamera: Rebirth. To further sponsor this, Tamashii Nation 2022 unveiled an official figure around November 18th-20th, alongside a newspaper featuring the event. Afterward, the crew was announced:

  1. Co-Director Hiroyuki Seshita (Netflix’s Godzilla anime) – Director
  2. CGI Artist Iijima Tetsu (Berserk and Shield Hero) – Producer
  3. Atsushi Tamura (Tamako Market) – Character Design
  4. Kan Takahama (Mariko Parade) – Monster Design

With a valiant production team behind the wheel, Gamera: Rebirth is looking to be very exciting.
