Back to the ’90s: “Back to the Future” Reboot?

The DeLorean’s Triumphant Return

DeLorean just released reserve options for their first new vehicle in 40 years.  The iconic time machine has a new look!  The beloved classic, “Back to the Future,” may not need a modern reboot.  However, what if it was and our intrepid heroes returned to the golden era of the 1990s, specifically 1993?  Picture the charming chaos of our protagonists navigating the vibrant world of flannel shirts, grunge music, and a rapidly evolving digital landscape. Just imagine the potential for humor, action, and, most importantly, subtle life lessons.

The original “Back to the Future” showcased Marty McFly and Doc Brown tackling 1955’s challenges while trying to get Marty back to the future.  In the reboot, they’d face a ’90s world filled with pop culture wonders and unique issues. Confronting perplexing problems and catchy tunes, our heroes would rediscover friendship, family, and more. They might even uncover universal secrets or at least Crystal Pepsi’s secret recipe. This reboot would offer a fresh take on a classic adventure.

Pop Culture, Movies, and Music

The year 1993 was a treasure trove of pop culture milestones.  The possibilities for delightful cameos and witty banter are genuinely endless.  Imagine Marty McFly and Doc Brown encountering a very young Leo and Johnny fresh off the set of “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” or crossing paths with a mullet-wearing David Hasselhoff in all his “Baywatch” glory.  Our adventurers could haphazardly end up at a Nirvana concert and see Kurt Cobain rocking on stage.

But it’s not just the celebrities that would make this reboot a nostalgic joyride.  Picture our protagonists grappling with ’90s technology: Marty McFly mistaking a pager for a portable hard drive or Doc Brown being excited by the birth of the “World Wide Web.”  Just think of the comedic gold as they marvel at the size of a Nokia brick phone or have to hear the mating call of a 14.4 baud modem accessing dial-up internet!  We chuckled at Captain Marvel wandering through a Blockbuster video store; imagine Marty and Doc being caught off-guard by what the Barbie Liberation Organization had “in-store” for them.

Iconic Fashion

Moreover, the fashion choices of the era would offer a visual feast of hilarity.  Our time adventurers could experiment with grunge fashion, donning oversized flannel shirts and Doc Martens, or perhaps even dabble in the questionable aesthetics of baggy pants and frosted tips.  Our favorite time-traveling duo is the perfect risk-takers to tackle the bold fashion statements of the ’90s.

While navigating the colorful world of 1993, Marty and Doc would inevitably encounter intriguing problems.  How would they deal with the impending arrival of the new millennium?  What if they crossed paths with a computer hacker dead set on exploiting the early days of the internet?  In true “Back to the Future” fashion, what if their actions in 1993 threatened to unravel the fabric of time itself?

Subtle life lessons

Yet, amidst the whirlwind of adventure, this reboot could also offer opportunities for reflection and growth.  Doc Brown, always the wise mentor, could impart valuable lessons on adapting to change and embracing the future with open arms. Marty may learn to cherish time with loved ones and live in the present.  Let us not forget Marty’s valuable future-altering lesson about being called a “chicken.”

A “Back to the Future” reboot may never happen; this writer would be perfectly content with that.  It is fun to imagine placing our heroes in 1993 in the middle of the grunge, baby internet, and mom jeans era. “Back to the Future” is a treasure to Sci-fi fans, and it pulls at the nostalgia strings thinking about how much fun a reboot could be.  Although, it sure is tempting to bring Marty McFly and Doc Brown back for an exhilarating journey in the nostalgic, neon-soaked world of 1993.

Just as a note: the current DMC is a Texas based company that simply bought the existing parts stock and naming rights from the original DMC. So this is technically a completely new DeLorean from new company. Not that it matters for the content of the article, but might be useful for people interested in the car and company.
