Star Wars Celebration has kicked off with a bang. Several huge announcements have been released. First and foremost was the addition of three new Star Wars films done by three different directors. According to Starwars.com, “Helming the movies are James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Dave Filoni (The Mandalorian, Ahsoka), and Academy Award- and Emmy Award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel, Saving Face).”
Who are these directors though and what type of Star Wars movies will they make? well lets take a look at each one.
James Mangold
Mr. Mangold is no stranger to sci-fi/fantasy films. Having directed two Wolverine films, The Wolverine and Logan. He also directed several serious drama films such as Girl, Interrupted and Walk the Line, he seemingly makes a fine choice for a Star Wars film. When he’s good, he’s very good…Logan, Walk the Line. But when he’s not, he’s really not…The Wolverine, Dial of Destiny (jury is out but no one is really thrilled).
He has the action down but also can add the drama the older fans enjoy. He has directed three different actors in Oscar-nominated performances: Angelina Jolie in Girl, Interrupted , and Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line. Both Jolie and Witherspoon won Oscars for their performances in his films. As stated before his film will be focused on the dawn of the Jedi, so it could possibly take its story from The Dawn of the Jedi novel.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy
This two time Academy Award winner for short subject documentaries got her first taste of the scifi/fantasy realm directing the Marvel series Ms. Marvel. Her background really doesn’t scream “FILMMAKER” as she graduated from Smith College with a bachelor of arts degree in economics and government, and completed master’s degrees in international policy studies and communication at Stanford University, but her mantle is decked out with trophy after trophy for her work in short films.
Her movie will focus on a time 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker. It will be about Rey and the rebuilding of the Jedi order after the fall of the First Order. Daisy Ridley will be reprising her role as Rey.
Mrs. Obaid-Chinoy won both of her Academy Awards for short subject documentaries. The fact that she is a multiple award winner gives the air of confidence that she could make a great movie. The jury is still out on her since she hasn’t directed a full length feature. Along with that she is dealing with some sensitive material among the fanbase and must tread carefully.
Dave Filoni
What more can be said about Mr. Filoni? Anyone who knows about Star Wars already realizes he is very well versed in the lore and how to present it. From The Clone Wars to The Mandalorian he can seemingly do no wrong when it comes to Star Wars. He has sat at the feet of the master (George Lucas) and learned the art of telling an amazing Star Wars story. This will be his first foray into a full length Star Wars film so this has been a long time coming. His movie will focus on the time slightly before the rise of the First Order and should tie all of his Mandoverse together.
