Since the cancellation of what would be Silent Hills AKA P.T. fans have been waiting for the dormant franchise to make a comeback. Finally, those prayers were answered in a presentation from Konami announcing a list of new Silent Hill games. Most importantly a Silent Hill 2 remake.
What makes Silent Hill 2 the best?
Since the original released back in 2001 for PlayStation 2, to outstanding reviews the game is considered a cult classic. With a score of 89 on Metacritic and over one million copies sold. The game introduced fans to a new level of immersive horror that would keep kids and adults up at night. The psychological horror game introduced us to fear of the unknown using atmosphere, lighting, and sound to create tension. Completely different from other traditional horror experiences like the use of Jump scares in Resident Evil and Five Nights at Freddy’s.
The game focused more on the story introducing us to many different characters that were also in the foggy town like Mary, James Sunderlin, and Maria. However, one character that stood out the most to many fans was Pyramid Head, created from James’s guilt and desired to be punished. Within the game everything served a purpose. From maintaining the atmosphere of the game to Mary’s letter slowly fading away as you progress through the game. The same letter from his DEAD wife that told him to go to Silent Hill. The game is great at providing the player with more and more questions to what’s going on rather than flat out telling you.
The game mainly focuses on grief, guilt, and punishment taking many inspirations from movies, books, and pieces of art like David Lynch’s Blue Velvet to the Russian novel Crime and Punishment. Silent Hill 2 constantly challenges the players perception of the game playing into the fear of things the player sees but can’t really comprehend. Giving the player the feeling of unease as they wonder throughout the almost empty town.

What’s new, what’s the same?
Even though this is still a Konami game the company has decided to work closely with Bloober Team. The developers behind The Medium, Blair Witch, Layers of Fear 1 & 2, and Observer. During Konami’s transmission with creative director and lead designer Mateusz Lenart, Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno, and lead producer Maciej Glomb. They talked about how the members of their team fell in love with horror games thanks to Silent Hill. “To ensure that we are keeping this unique Silent Hill atmosphere intact we are working closely with the original creators” says Glomb.
Alongside them will be some of the members from Team Silent who helped create the original game. Like concept artist Masahiro Ito, composer Akira Yamaoka, and producer of the series Motoi Okamoto. Even though this is by a new developer Mateusz Lenart wants to capture that same eerier feeling the game had on audiences 21 years ago. To do this they are building the game from the ground up with the use of Unreal engine 5 and over the shoulder camera while still keeping the fog. “So, we can immerse player into the game world as much as possible” says Lenart.
