Gudetama Cracking Into Netflix This December

Gudetama are squishy, lovable yolks. They’re lazy, love syrup, and only have one route in life: being eaten. On September 25th, Netflix’s official Anime YouTube channel launched a trailer, providing insight on the upcoming series. Join Geek News Now as we discuss Gudetama, and the exciting journey ahead.

What Is A Gudetama, Actually?

To start off, let’s begin with the basics. Enter Emi Nagashima (Hello Kitty‘s creator), or Amy for short. The then-26-year-old Sanrio developer was inspired from an egg she prepred for dinner one night, after a long day at work. The droopy yolk center resembled that of the common folk: constantly tired throughout their life.

In 2013, Gudetama was submitted in the Sanrio food-based competition, but came second to another character, Kirimichan. Despite this, it received high praise for its relatableness, and ranked high in marketing. Furthermore, in 2014-2017, a short cartoon featuring the yolk aired on the TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System) program titled Asa-Chan!, a family morning news section. Needless to say, Gudetama really hit a soft spot with kids and adults alike.

Finally, in 2022, Netflix announced Gudetama; An Eggcelent Adventure will be airing on its streaming service on December 13th.

Let’s Get Cracking!

Gudetama are lazy creatures. So lazy, that even being carried around doeesn’t bother them much because they’re too lethargic to say no. However, this all changed when a young hatchling, Shakipiyo, sets out on a quest to find her mother. Tagging along is a lazy, syrup-loving yolk, who only wants to laze about and drink syrup all day. When Shakipiyo discovers that these yolks have an expiration date, the young chick hastens her quest before her undeveloped sibling rots away.

Accompanied by Gudetama March by Yuko Hara, the upcoming Netflix series is sure to be quite the journey.

Gudetama Cast & Crew:

The film is produced by Sanrio, the creators of Hello Kitty and Aggretsuko. As for the cast, it’s quite stellar:

Shunusuke Takeuchi voices Gudetama. He also voiced Howard Lovecraft (Bungo Stray Dogs), and Kyoutani Kentarou (Haikyu!! Second Season).

Seiran Fukushima voices Shakipiyo. Although she doesn’t have a variety of voice talent, she’s better known for her acting in Don’t Call It Mystery, and Ultraman Orb.

Accompanying our voice actors, the cast will also include Akiyoshi Nakao (Rookies), Serena Motola (Voices In The Wind), and Sarutaki Minigawa (Drugstore Girl). With a unique and diverse casting to accompany the films main characters, we can only wait and see how they’ll fit into the series main story.
