Legendary Star Wars Actor Mark Hamill has spoken out in defense of the prequel trilogy (PT). The PT has been widely panned by critics and fans alike as slow and poorly written. Who can blame them with all the talk of trade disputes and hatred of sand. Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the Original Trilogy (OT), however seems to be a fan.
“I was impressed the prequels had their own identity,” Hamill said. “They were criticized because they were exposition-heavy and more cerebral and probably, like he said back in 1976, they weren’t as commercial. It’s a darker story. But in the age of social media, people’s voices are amplified, and I’m shocked at how brutal they can be, not just in the case of Star Wars films, but across the board.”
One member of the Star Wars family who doesn’t hide her dislike of the prequels is Marcia Lucas, who won an Oscar for editing the original “Star Wars” along with Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew. She returned to co-edit Return of the Jedi and went uncredited on The Empire Strikes Back. Marcia Lucas was married to George Lucas between 1969 and 1983. Marcia has revealed Phantom Menace was so bad that she cried after a screening of the movie. Marcia has spoken out recently against the sequel trilogy as well.
All of this was revealed in a recent interview for J.W. Rinzler’s just-published book on “The Empire Strikes Back” and Return of the Jedi film producer Howard Kazanjian.
As far as Marcia Lucas is concerned she was married to George Lucas from 1969 to 1983, three of those being Star Wars films so she may have some insight into the mind of Mr. Lucas. However her criticisms should be, in my opinion, taken with a grain of salt. If you were to go look at her IMDB page she has all of 7 editing credits to her name. It seems that if you would like people to hear your opinion on movie making you may want to have a little more experience under your belt.
