Geek News Now: 2021 Quick Recap

2021 had finally reached its halfway point. Since the beginning of this year, there have been a lot of things going on throughout various companies. Marvel, DC, and even Gamefreak had interesting news to share during their past months. Here, at Geek News Now, we will be going over our 2021 recap, and how they will effect the coming months ahead.

Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne:

Our first entry at Geek News Now includes none other than Robert Pattinson entering DC as the new Batman.

It came as a surprise to everyone when director Matt Reeves chose Pattinson to become the next Dark Knight. Ben Affleck was not only set to reprise his role as Batman, but he was also taking on the role of directing the film. However, Ben dropped the project, and Reeves took over. The film takes place outside the original DCEU, Reeves stating that this film would focus more on Bruce Wayne’s detective side.

Reeves favored Pattinson largely due to the fact that the Twilight star had yet to appear in either a Marvel or DC Film. This indicated to Reeves that the actor was up for grabs. However, both Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult competed for the role, boring some equal-level competition between the two. In the end, it had been Pattinson that won.

With Robert Pattinson fitted into his new Batsuit, the Twilight star is well on his way to become the next DC star.

Amber Heard Vs Johnny Depp:

Our next entry into Geek News Now features the long-fought case of Amber Heard and Johnny Depp.

The two then co-stars had met previously during the filming of The Rum Diary back in 2009. They had began to date since then. In 2015, Depp and Heard officially announced their marriage. However, in 2016, Heard suddenly filed for divorce against the Pirates actor, claiming Domestic Violence.

This simple action had not only painted Depp in a false light, but Warner Brothers quickly cut ties with the actor, following a dramatic court case. This, in turn, left him unable to reprise his role as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3.

Dates for a scheduled hearing jumped from January to May 7th, due to the Pandemic. One trial had been scheduled on September of last year, but had been postponed. The courts that denied Depp have stated that the previous trial was “fair” in regards to Heard’s case. All is not in favor of the actress, however. Following the announcement of Amber resuming her role as Mira in Aquaman 2 (2022), roughly 1.8 million people stated that they will boycott the film if Amber reprises her role.

Depp released a statement on Twitter, stating that while he is frustrated with the way things have played out, he will continue to remain strong and fight until he is heard.

Spolier Alert: Marvel’s Loki To Trigger Multiverse of Madness:

This fifth Geek News Now entry will contain spoilers for those who haven’t watched the show. Let’s explain just how Loki (2021) will effect future MCU projects.

With the release of Loki on Disney+, Marvel fans finally saw what happened to the God of Mischief after the Avengers’ failed time heist for the Tesseract that led to Loki escaping in Avengers: Endgame (2019). After Loki escapes with the Tesseract, he is captured by the Time Variant Authority (TVA). Here, they explain that Loki’s escape triggered a time anomaly. The TVA fixes Loki’s timeline, though refuses to release him from custody.

The TVA allows Loki to live, in favor of him tracking down another variant of himself that is going around killing other agents. Loki and the TVA come across a female version of Loki, who then uses stolen reset charges to cause chaos within the sacred timeline. The episode ends with Loki following his female doppelganger through a portal.

After the premiere of the second episode, fans began to speculate that Lady Loki will be responsible for triggering the Multiverse of Madness. This, in turn, will invoke a response from none other than the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange. This is yet to be determined, however, as only two episodes have been released.

Loki is available to watch on Disney+, and Marvel fans are anxious to see the outcome to the series.

WandaVision Clashes S.W.O.R.D. with Magic:

For our next entry into Geek News Now, we will be discussing WandaVision, and its magical impact to the MCU.

WandaVision, which premiered on January 15th of this year, had not only changed the way newly founded S.W.O.R.D (Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division) would proceed with their plans for a better tomorrow, it had also changed the way magic worked in the MCU.

WandaVision takes place weeks after Endgame. Wanda, unable to cope with her loss of losing Vision, creates a massive Hex barrier over the town of Westview. Shortly after, S.W.O.R.D., directed by Tyler Hayward, responds to this anomaly, attempting to stop Wanda and free Westview. During this, a witch by the name of Agatha Harkness makes her appearance and attempts to discreetly take over Wanda’s world.

Meanwhile, Darcy and S.W.O.R.D. agent Monica Rambeau uncover what Hayward had done to Vision after Endgame. In an attempt to convince Wanda to drop her Hex, Monica enters it, gaining newfound powers in the process. Using these powers, Monica manages to convince Wanda to free Westview. In the process, this erases both Vision and her children from her fantasy world.

In the final battle against Agatha, Wanda goes all out with her Hex powers, creating Witch Ruins on the walls of her Hex. This renders Agatha powerless, resulting in her defeat, and Wanda wiping her memories clean. Wanda now separates herself from the world, using a book titled The Darkhold, to access more magic and become stronger.

WandaVision had not only forced S.W.O.R.D. to rethink their view on the world, but also shift magic in a new, mysterious way. One, might I add, that will change the MCU in possibly more ways than one.

Zack Schneider’s Justice League Unveils DC Multiverse:

As our next entry to our Geek News Now recap, we will be discussing Justice League, both the 2018 release, and Schneider cut.

March 13, 2018 dated the premiere of Justice League. Zack Schneider had wanted to direct the film, but stepped down due to family issues. Joss Whedon became the new director mid-production, though he was uncredited as the Co-Director.

The film was met with severely negative reviews, with film aggregator Rotten Tomatoes giving the DC film a score of 40%. Some critics even spoke up, stating this to be a unofficial Marvel: Avengers ripoff.

However, In March of this year, Zack Schneider returned as the film’s director. Thanks to his efforts in directing this new version, the ‘Schneider Cut’ was released. In response, Rotten Tomatoes gave a much higher praise of 71%, mostly due to the new way the film presented itself.

This version of the Justice League had also given many theorists, such as Film Theory’s own Matthew Patrick, something to work with. Matthew Patrick speculated that, based on the way the Schneider Cut played out, this was a branch within the DCEU Timeline. For more info on that, you can check out his video by clicking here.

With an alternate timeline within the DCEU set, it will almost be impossible to tell what fate lies ahead for the Justice League.

Dominic Purcell No Longer a Legend of Tomorrow:

You read correctly, folks. Our second entry into Geek News Now, this involves none other than Dominic Purcell leaving the CW.

Dominic, known for his role as Mick Rory (Heatwave), is walking out on the CW. However, this is not because of a character death, or any other reason involving his character. This decision stood based on the CW’s treatment toward Dominic. Purcell stated that he was dissatisfied with the way CW executives were handling things during his time with the show. He had even urged some unnamed co-workers to speak up, and to also address issues within the production.

Although not much was said about the situation between executives and Purcell, enough was shown to hint at some level of discomfort between the CW and its actors. Candice Patton, known for her role in The Flash as Iris West-Allen, had expressed major racism issues until the BLM movement in 2020. Other actors included Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/The Atom) and Courtney Ford (Nora Darhk), who were asked to leave the CW partway through Season 5. Routh stated he didn’t want to leave, but the station didn’t give him a choice in the matter.

With quite a lot of tension between the CW and its respectable cast in Legends of Tomorrow, none are quite sure how long it will be until the show faces serious decline.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl Ghost Announcement:

For our final entry into GNN, we have none other than Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Gamefreak announced that a remake of Diamond and Pearl, released on Nintendo DS in 2006, will be receiving long-awaited remakes. These new titles, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, will release for the Nintendo Switch on September 19th, of this year. However, this begs the question: what other news is there of these remakes.

Following the announcement of the new Pokémon titles were both the trailer and a release date. Furthermore, once the release date was announced, a Facebook post stated that the pre-order would include a figure set of Lucas and Dawn. However, upon doing research at my local GameStop to inquire about the pre-order, this has yet to bear any truth.

Following the announcement back in May 26th, there has yet to be any new information regarding both games. This could mean that Gamefreak is possibly holding back on information. With past titles, there had always been so much shown for the games, Sun and Moon being a prime example. It could be that Gamefreak is withholding vital information, so as not to unveil so much.

With only a couple of months remaining before the official release date, Pokémon fans are anticipating what lies in store for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

And, that does it. With so much that has happened this year, its quite uncertain just how much more awaits us in the coming months. Have knowledge of anything overlooked? Want to add your input? Then, be sure to drop on by our Facebook page, and say hello! And, as always, Stay Geeky!
