“Mario Golf” Among The Big Nintendo Announcements!

Nintendo opened the gates and unleashed an overwhelming wave of game announcements yesterday during their Direct presentation! On Tuesday Nintendo announced they were going to do a presentation that would include Super Smash Bros. news as well as other game announcements the following day. They said it would be 50 minutes long and they packed a lot in that block of time! There is way too many games to list here so we are just going to cover the biggest announcements. Let’s get into it!

The presentation opened with the reveal of Pyra and Mythra as the new characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. They are swappable in combat, much like Sheik and Zelda were in past Smash bros. games. I went into more detail about it and shared my thoughts in a separate piece you can read here.

Fall Guys

Soon after that we got the announcement about last summer’s biggest game, Fall Guys! Fall Guys is headed to the Switch this summer. The question however is if Fall Guys still matters now. It had it’s moment in the sun this past summer before Among Us stole the spotlight. Perhaps the game will experience a revival of sorts on Switch.

Monster Hunter Rise

The next major trailer we got was for Monster Hunter Rise, a game that was announced back in September of last year. Monster Hunter Rise is easily one of the Switch’s most anticipated games and fans are clamoring for it’s arrival! The game is so popular that when the demo for it came out last month it actually caused stress on the Nintendo E-Shop servers. Nintendo was even worried the servers might’ve crashed under the rush to download the demo. Monster Hunter Rise is the next mainline installment in the series after 2018’s Monster Hunter World, which is Capcom’s best selling game in it’s 40 year history. Personally I can’t wait for the game which is due next month. Check out the new trailer for the game below.

Mario Golf: Super Rush

Nintendo followed that up with the world premiere of Mario Golf: Super Rush. Nintendo is famous for it’s Mario themed game adaptations of sports such as soccer, basketball, tennis, and of course, golf. Mario fans have been  eagerly awaiting to see when the famed stout plumber would return with a golf game since his last outing in 2014 with Mario Golf: World Tour. The new iteration includes several new modes including one called “Speed Golf”. In Speed Golf, instead of waiting for everyone to take their turn, all golfers play at the same time and race each other to see who can make it into the hole firs, regardless of the number of swings taken! Hardcore Mario enthusiasts are pleased and so am I! Super Rush is coming to Switch this June.

The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

While everyone was looking forward to Breath of the Wild 2, Nintendo quickly shut down everyone’s expectations of getting an update at this Nintendo Direct. The Game’s producer came out and told us to wait for an update on BotW2 later this year and that development is going smoothly for it. However, they wouldn’t leave us without a Legend of Zelda announcement completely and revealed that Skyward Sword is getting a HD port to Switch.

The controls are being reworked to work with both, motion controls and traditional controls. Not only are the controls being reworked but the game is also getting a special limited-edition pair of joy cons to commemorate the release. Skyward Sword was the last major console Legend of Zelda game to come out for console before Breath of the Wild. The HD release, as well as the special joy con controllers, will be released this July 16th.

Splatoon 3

The Nintendo Direct closed out the show with one last game, and that was the reveal of Splatoon 3. The Splatoon series has become a standout franchise for Nintendo and has filled out a niche that Nintendo had long been missing, a multiplayer shooter. The last game in the series, Splatoon 2, was released in July of 2017, a few months after the Switch console had launched. Honestly we are overdue for a sequel and it looks like Nintendo was aware of that. However we will have to wait until 2022 to play it, meaning the game must still be deep in development. The visuals in the trailer appear to be a step up from Splatoon 2 and the game’s story mode looks like it is full of mystery and discovery. We posted the trailer down below.

Which announcement from yesterday’s Nintendo Direct has you most excited or hyped to play? Which games did you really want to see that Nintendo didn’t show or address? Comment down below. The biggest omission as far as I can tell was Pokémon. Then again Pokémon’s 25th Anniversary is next week and they could just be holding out for that.  We’ll have to wait and see what’s in store for it.  These were just the biggest announcements from the show. For the full announcement trailers you can watch the whole Nintendo Direct here.
