A Cinematic Masterpiece Revisited

There are a few movies that have been made that most people would say are true cinematic masterpieces. The Godfather, Gone with the Wind, and Casablanca are just a few of these. Then in 1978 viewers were treated to something that is nothing like any of those movies. I, of course, am speaking of the Star Wars Holiday Special.

This TV special was so bad that it does not even fall into the “so bad its good” category. This is just plain BAD. Even watching the trailer is enough to make one lose all faith in George Lucas and his storytelling ability. The plot about Wookiee life day was sub par, the acting was atrocious, and the special guests were far from special. A third of the special was literally Wookiees growling and yelling at each other with no sub titles. We just were to assume and guess at what was going on. The only redeeming value was the cartoon in the middle of the mess that introduced the world to the biggest bounty hunter in the galaxy, Boba Fett.

All that being said it was recently announced that the holiday special would be getting the Lego treatment. This will be a satire of the infamous special only in the way Lego can do. According to IMDB.com the plot is “Rey leaving her friends to prepare for Life Day as she sets off on an adventure to gain a deeper knowledge of the Force. At a mysterious temple, she is hurled into a cross-timeline adventure.”

My family has made it a holiday tradition to suffer through the agony of the holiday special every year. This new special, however bad it may or may not be, will become a must watch among the multitude of other holiday classics like It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. A slew of actors from The Clone Wars TV show will be making appearances such as James Arnold Taylor, Matt Lanter and Dee Bradley Baker. Billy Dee Williams will be reprising his role of Lando Calrissian and Anthony Daniels will be returning as C-3P0.

Lego has created six Star Wars specials as well as five different series. None of them should be considered canon but rather a hysterical farce of events happening in the Star Wars universe. This one should be no different. I expect it to be a funny romp in the Lego world and would not be surprised if it took a few jabs at the original special.  The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special will be available on November 17, 2020 only on Disney+.
