SDCC: Go to the Animated Final Frontier

Just announced at ComicCon @ Home: Nickelodeon has decided to boldly go for an animated Star Trek show.  Star Trek: Prodigy is set to premiere on Nickelodeon in 2021 with no exact date announced at this time. Prodigy comes from Eye Animation Productions through CBS.  It was originally announced in 2019 but SDCC @ Home had the first look at the official logo.

According to the plot on imdb, Prodigy is about “A group of teenagers steal a derelict Starfleet vessel and use it to explore the galaxy.”

An animator with Nickelodeon has exclusively told Geek News Now that Prodigy is “a timeless series” that is “set up to be epic.” The animator also stated that “It is written in a manner that treats the viewer like they are intelligent.  It is not dumbed down like normal kid’s shows.  The animation will feel more like the 3D cinematics you see out of game companies.” Prodigy sounds like it will be a great addition to the Trekverse.

Other big news came for Star Trek: Lower Decks!  The show is an animated comedy (the first comedy animation) taking place in year 2380 (the clip we got to see said it was “stardate 574362.2”). The panel revealed that it takes place in the era of The Next Generation, after Nemesis, but before Picard. Lower Decks is the first 100% animated series since Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973). Star Trek: Short Treks (2019) doesn’t count as it only had two released episodes which is not a season.  The panel also spoke that it is canon without being strict canon.

We got to meet the voices behind the characters and learn about their character personalities.  The Cast includes Jerry O’Connell (Scream 2, Mission to Mars, Scary Movie V, Justice League Dark, etc…) as Commander Ramson, Jack Quaid (Hunger Games, Logan Lucky, Rampage, etc.) as Ensign Boimler, Eugene Cordero (Kong Skull Island, The Mule, When In Rome, The High Note, etc…) among a great cast listing. The characters are members of the crew of the USS Cerritos which is a “2nd Contact” starfleet cruiser. Cast members have said that the crew performs as a “team effort.”  One of the panel questions to the cast got us a few almost spoilers with spoiler bleeps.  What we were able to be confirmed about was the appearance of the Holodeck! Very exciting!

Star Trek: Lower Decks is set to premiere on CBS All-Access on August 6, 2020.
