Jake Lloyd was only six years old at the time he auditioned for the role of “Anakin Skywalker” in the Star Wars prequel film “The Phantom Menace”. Although the movie was a box office success and revitalized the franchise for decades to come, young Jake Lloyd would face a short acting career and a long history of bullying and unnecessary criticism. Much like Ahmed Best (who was almost bullied to suicide after he played Jar Jar Binks), Star Wars fans were not especially kind to the child actor, despite his best intentions and warm interactions with them.
On June 17, 2015, Lloyd was arrested in South Carolina for reckless driving, driving without a license in his possession, and resisting arrest; he failed to stop for a red light, which initiated a high-speed police chase. He was released to a nearby psychiatric facility, with schizophrenia listed as the reason.
Tragedy struck their family when his younger sister, Madison, died peacefully in her sleep on July 16, 2018 at the age of 26. Lisa Lloyd, Jake’s mother, described it as “shattering” to both her and Jake.

Since then, it’s been all quiet for the young man. He has been living a peaceful life and has been focusing on himself a great deal. I spoke to his mother, Lisa Lloyd, at length about how he is doing. As an author’s note, I have had the pleasure of interacting with Jake Lloyd on several occasions and found him to be a brilliant mind and a hilarious sense of humor. He filled in for me as a host on my podcast once, where he spoke directly to the fans and also put to rest the rumor that he hated Star Wars.
The following statement is approved for release by his mother, who is tirelessly working with him.
“We would like to thank everyone for their kind words, their support, and goodwill. Jake has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, but unfortunately he also has a symptom called anosognosia which causes a lack of insight into his illness. This only adds to the struggle he faces, which has been very difficult after the tragic loss of his younger sister, Madison. He has moved closer to his family and we are all working hard to help him with this. He is still a kind and caring person and we hope to have him back to his fun and entertaining self as soon as possible. Jake will continue to make progress with the love and support you continue to show.”
Sadly, Star Wars actors and actresses continue to face harsh words from Keyboard Kowards who delight in tearing down what we should be celebrating. These “people” should take a long look into the mirror and realize that words have consequences and there is nothing clever in what they do. Jake Lloyd’s heroic fight has persisted since he walked onto tens of thousands of screens in 1999. I, for one, will be rooting for him (and others like him) to live the normal life he, and his family, deserve.

Well I don’t understand why people are kids would be saying any negative things about this kid who played Anakin Skywalker unless they’re jealous because he did and absolutely fantastic and job as Anakin Skywalker to me. He did an outstanding job and people shouldn’t be teasing him unless they’re jealous. He’s an actor and that’s what actors do is play parts to make movies so if you’re that jealous, go to acting school, start acting in plays, and become an actor, but quit trying to ruin everybody else’s lives, or trying to get in their heads, trying to ruin their life when you’re so unhappy with your own, if you’re that unhappy with your life, I suggest changing it but you don’t try to ruin somebody’s life just because you’re unhappy with the movie that’s what’s wrong with this world today people are so cruel just because they’re unhappy with their own lives they will try to ruin other peoples lives, and God help them, because in the end, when God does come to judge guess what they will be judged harshly because you’re supposed to help people not hurt them. God bless everyone may God watch over you amen.

I’m never amazed at people’s behavior. We see it in the news every day. Unfortunately being a celebrity attracts the worst kind. Every Christmas our family watches Jingle all the Way as our holiday movie. Please give our blessings to Jake and his family.

God bless him and his family. I enjoyed him as Anakin and the movie. I struggle with a deep depression which is a horribly empty life and Star Wars has been a medicine for me and I have met many of the actors and actresses. Prayers for Jake indeed and thanks to him for his part in Star Wars

Hey dude! Keep it up! You should come back acting! You did well in EP1 and your skills must improved a lot since because of your life experience. Look at Sylvester Stallone, he was a horrible actor and as he aged he got more and more better. F*ck the bullies and all that sh*t people! You got the worst of them but are they the part of the greatest story of all time? They are nothing. You are Anakin Skywalker!

Completely agree!!! Never ceases to amaze me how cruel and stupid people can be guided by jealousy…Trashing a kid??? I’m on board: they are nobody and they can never ever take away that you are Anakin Skywalker forever!!! Hope you feel better, you were a star at only 6, and you still are!!!

I met Jake at a convention in Toronto many years ago, 2007 I believe. The brief encounter was pleasant and I was thankful to have met a Star Wars icon. Jake I wish you well. Nobody deserves to be attacked for their excellent efforts to please Star Wars fans. It seems some so called fans just don’t get it.

We are one! Star Wars community is one! Regardless if you are a “fly by night” fan, hard core fan, or even a casual fan! We are all one! Anyone involved with Star Wars movies is part of the family! Jake Lloyd is part of that family! It would be awesome to have him at Star Wars Celebrations so fans can embrace him for his contribution! THIS IS THE WAY!

I enjoyed the episode 1 movie overall. Jake did a great job and I hope he is proud of his accomplishments. I wish him and his family all the best.
I was impressed recently while watching a documentary about how much competition there was for the role as young Anakin.
All the best and glad to hear he is doing better.

I too suffer from a mental illness – that’s a daily and eternal battle in of itself so to add his loss and the despicable backlash from the world after his performance into the mix is a hell I can only begin to imagine but one I am glad he has everlasting support from his family and fans to help him overcome and succeed. Good luck to you Jake – The Anakin that showed how pure and genuine he was, a reflection of yourself. May the force be with you!

I’m glad he is closer to his family and working to continue improving his emotional and psychological health, no doubt which was compounded by 35-year-old virgins living in their mothers’ basements bullying him on the Internet.
He was a child, and an actor doing exactly what he was directed to do. He was actually a good actor for such a young person, just had a bad part. He was really good in “Jingle All the Way”, which came out first.
I hope he makes a full recovery and continues to enjoy life.

I never understand why there was so much criticism regarding his performance. Every time I watch the movie I think he made a solid young Anakin. And it probably wasn’t easy with so much green screen and post production.
I think that “Star Wars fans” are globally pleased with him, but there is a toxic Star Wars fandom that makes the whole fandom look bad.
And it is even more sad when it does so much damage to some people life.
Best wishes to the Lloyd family.

So sorry to hear what he and his family have gone through… nobody will ever know the struggles he went through being so young in a blockbuster film, not to mention the other film work under his belt! I am an adult, and my exposure with much of the Hollyweird system had such negativity and he had to deal with that as a young kid! Could you imagine?
I particularly enjoyed him in “Jingle all the Way”, but even that aside, he is first and foremost a human being and he is suffering along with the rest of his family. I really hope he can turn this into a positive (as much as possible given the situation) with the help of his family and come out the other side happier and healthier than ever! Best wishes to him!

Sending best wishes to Jake and family, we all love star wars and whether you like the prequels and sequels or not, fans have got way too personal, abusive and downright nasty about these movies, and this is a result, in all walks of life people can be so damn cruel, what a horrible world it can be….

Mr. Gremillion, please, I really think you need to do more research on Schizophrenia syndrome in order to stop spreading Hollywood misinformation that dates back to pre-scientific 19th century speculation and superstition. It’s not caused by bullying….
Schizophrenia is NOT caused by trauma. There is no such thing as a “mental” realm in nature. It is a severe brain disease that is randomly visited upon people just like MS or Parkinson’s. It’s not the victims’ fault or due to things that happen to you. It’s physical damage to the prefrontal cortex at the cellular level. Anosognosia is caused specifically by damage to the amygdala. Please please get informed and do your job as a journalist. Please. 6 million American victims alone desperately need brain healthcare, and pretending Schizophrenia isn’t a brain disease doesn’t do anything to prevent the immense suffering and violence. It just saves insurance companies money.
David Gremillion

Johann, I re-read the article a couple of times to be sure I didn’t miss something, but I did my research prior to writing this. At no point did I make the connection from being bullied to his Schizophrenia.
This article is an update on his health and well-being.
True, I did take an editorial slant at the end against bullying, but I didn’t state that it caused his current condition. I’m just not a fan of bullying.

January 30, 2020 at 10:30 pm
I don’t believe David said or even implied Jake’s schizophrenia was caused by Jake’s acting. He understands it is a medical condition that is believed to have a genetic factor. Jake would have been schizophrenic whether or not he had been an actor or anything else for that matter. I appreciate you being an advocate, but please do not tear down those who are trying to help by spreading other people’s stories who have mental illnesses.

Jake Lloyd did a really good job bringing young Anakin Skywalker to life and portraying him.
I was never a critic of the Prequels. I was a Prequel-Defender, because I was 15 when I saw Star Wars Episode 1 together with my sister and Umut Özmızrak in the Theaters; So I grew up watching them in the Theater and again on TV.
Fuck the bullies, they destroyed a life. They are by no means «real Star Wars Fans». They are simply scum.
BTW: I first saw the original Trilogy in 1989, when I was 5 years old (born on 1984). So I «only» had to wait ten years too see the Prequels, came not sixteen as the older people, who saw the originals between 1977 and 1983 I the Theaters.
Yours sincerely

I always thought his role didn’t fit the movie, but then again I cant say I think the movie was more than adequate.
All this said, I am very impressed of Jake Loyd to carry so much of the movie. If anyone dropped the ball here, its George Lucas. The movie is not bad, and its fantastically made, though the script isn’t what I believe it should be, and the language is way to stiff. All this said. Jack Loyd does NOT deserve to be bullied. He delivered a high end performance that many adult actors are incapable off, and he was so young at the time. This movie should have been a start of a great career for him.
I’m angry at all the trolls that have bullied him online. I do wish him well, and hope that he will be well, it’s a tragedy to loose ones sister so young. I would be devastated if I lost any of mine two sisters.
To all trolls, grow up, and move out of your parents basement.

I have to say that I am saddened by the treatment of several actors who have been in Star Wars movies. I enjoyed Jake’s performance both in Phantom Menace and in Jingle All the Way. Also, have to say that I am jealous. He got to act with actors like Liam Neeson and Arnold Schwarzenegger. I want to say this to Jake, if it can get to him: Please do not think that we all share the hatred that some have shown you. There are many of us in the fandom that appreciate what you did and how you stepped up to be Anakin Skywalker. You have done well, and you are good.

*** When the Star Wars franchise started making movies again, and “The Phantom Menace” was released in 1999, not only was I happy that one of my favorite science-fiction franchises was back on the big screen, but I was completely happy with the movie itself, the story and the performances of all actors in the film. Jake Lloyd’s performance was absolutely brilliant. I could not imagine anyone else playing the role of young Anakin Skywalker.
*** I am a Star Wars fan for life because of everyone involved in the making of every Star Wars movie, and that includes Jake Lloyd. Thanks for your awesome work in the film.

I find it incomprehensible that such a fine actor should have been subjected to such ridicule. His outstanding ability and incredible talent are undeniable in every part he has done. I hope he will take heart in our encouragement and know that we hope to see him continue performing. God bless and take care!

Jake.
When your mind clears and you’re able to read all these comments, rest assured that you have a legion of loving and hopefully supporters rooting for you.
So much love and hugs to you and your family.

My 11 year old son suffers from mental illness. My heart goes out to both of you! It is not easy. But what is the hardest to me, is that he cannot control his behaviors sometimes, amd yet the people that bully him can. They are making the choice to behave this way. My son has found much comfort in Star Wars. And I have shared with him that Anakin has a mental illness as well. He looks up to you now. You are his hero. Please, focus on the good you are doing. By sharing your story, you make people feel less alone. Thank you! I wouldn’t wish this on anyone, but it feels so good to see I am not alone as well, mom. You know how isolated it is to be the mom of someone who struggles. But, we will never stop fighting for our children. Thank you both!

People are moronic and demonstrate it behind keyboards. And attacking children is unfathomable. Jake deserves peace and support, esp6in light of the two tragedies he faced/faces. I pray for that peace and happiness to him.

I never saw or heard ANY fans bash Jake. Back then we only had the Star Wars main site forums & theforce forums to discuss it on. No social media. I did see Media and critics do it though, to the point that Ron Howard stepped in. It wasn’t until Red Letter Media stepped in with a negative review that I saw any large number of people bash the prequels at all.
🙁 I remember reading he was bullied in school (tragic but not uncommon – and it shouldn’t BE common)
I genuinely hope he gets better. I think he did a great job of Anakin & I enjoyed Jingle All the Way too. I am really sorry to hear about his sister!

Any so called Fan would not bully an actor just for playing a role. I’m sorry for the actions of a spoiled group of fans that think it’s ok to spread hate about a universe that has been nothing but endearing to not one but 3 generations.

I hope Jake is doing well now. Recently I re-watched Star Wars I with my 7-year-old son. Finally he was old enough to appreciate the star wars movies and liked young Anakin in the movie. Hope Jake can get what he likes and enjoy his life.
